Everyone's rate of learning is different, so there can be a big variation in the number of hours of driving lessons needed, but here are a few examples:

The complete beginners

Julie was still at school and took driving lessons at a steady rate during her training.  After quite a hesitant start she was making good progress and a practical test was booked in due course. Julie passed the test at Aylesbury at the first attempt, after a total of about 34 hours of driving school lessons.

Andy was a plumber based in Aylesbury and needed a driving licence for his job.  Early training went well, but stalled a little in the middle stages.  He was in a real hurry to take a test, but failed at the first attempt.  Additional lessons got things back on track and Andy passed at the second attempt after a total of about 36 hours of driving lessons.

Moped or off-road experience

John was an experienced moped driver and had a good degree of road awareness as a result. His driving lessons went very well, but a first test was failed due to a single problem at a roundabout. After a few additional lessons he passed a second attempt at the practical test, having undertaken a total of about 25 hours with the driving instructor.

Learned some years ago

Cath had learned to drive to a good standard a few years earlier, but had not taken a practical test due to a long period living abroad.  The need was to restore confidence and raise the standard of driving to meet modern test requirements.  Cath passed her test at the first attempt after approximately 20 hours of lessons with the driving instructor.

Thorough training with parents

Liz had received driving lessons from her parents, but was not confident on the road and felt unprepared for the practical test. Early lessons with the driving instructor revealed some basic problems in general driving and difficulties with certain of the manoeuvres. After dealing with the issues a test was booked.  Liz passed first time at Aylesbury after about 18 hours with the driving instructor..

Foreign driving licence

Vijay was driving on a foreign non-EEC licence and had to pass a UK test within a limited amount of time. Lessons were given by the driving school on correct observations and carrying out manoeuvres to the necessary standard. Vijay passed his practical test after 12 hours of driving lessons.

Previous failed tests

Rich had previously failed two driving tests and was looking for a second opinion and extra help in passing the practical driving test. About 10 hours of tuition were provided by the driving instructor prior to a further test. Rich was successful on this third occasion.
