The driving school supports tests at Aylesbury and Leighton Buzzard, with most carried out at Aylesbury. The instructor has in depth knowledge of the driving test routes.

Minimum ages and licensing

For most people the minimum age at which you can start driving lessons is 17. You will need to obtain a provisional icence before you start and make sure that any vehicle used is roadworthy and fully taxed and insured. You will need to be accompanied by an approved driving instructor or by another person over 21 years of age and who has held (and still holds) a licence in the relevant vehicle category for at least 3 years.  The car must display L plates.

The best online resource for information about the legal requirements is the government website at http://www.direct.gov.uk/motoring.

The requirements may vary for those who are disabled and for those holding licences from another country.

How many driving lessons do I need?

The amount of time needed to learn to drive varies widely between individuals. The DSA quotes an average of 45 hours driving instructor training plus 22 hours private practice. Some people will learn significantly quicker than this, others more slowly. Assuming you are planning to take your practical test at Aylesbury, at least the later part of the lesson programme should be carried out in Aylesbury. Your driving instructor will review your needs at regular intervals through your lessons and discuss your progress with you. As a guide, take a look at some case studies.

Theory and practical tests: what comes first?

You can start driving lessons as soon as you have obtained a provisional licence.  However, you have to pass the theory test before you can apply for the practical test.  After passing the theory test you have up to two years to pass the practical test, otherwise the process must be started again. At Aylesbury, there is a practical test centre, but the theory test has to be taken at Oxford, Milton Keynes or elsewhere.

Generally it is a good idea to start studying for the theory test at an early stage - the theory complements and helps develop your practical driving skills.

After the practical test: Pass Plus

Passing the practical test will allow you to drive unaccompanied on a full driving licence. The Pass Plus scheme has been introduced as a result of serious concern about the accident rate amongst recently qualified drivers. Pass Plus aims to emphasis driving attitude as well as practical skill.  It is a six module course of driving lessons that includes aspects of driving, such as motorway driving, that will not have been covered at the learner stage. The course is not expensive and the Pass Plus certificate will usually result in lower insurance premiums, so it is worth doing even from a purely financial perspective. The lessons are conducted by a fully qualified driving instructor who is registered with the DSA to carry out Pass Plus.
